Kava Cost Per Serve Calculator
Set a target kavalactone dose and compare every Kavain format on what a single serve actually costs — with live wholesale pricing.
Price per kilogram is a misleading way to compare kava formats. A kilogram of 80% oleoresin and a kilogram of 6% traditional grind are not the same purchase — one carries thirteen times the active material. The only honest comparison is cost per milligram of kavalactones, translated into what a single serve costs.
Sounds complicated? We got you, the calculator below does the hard work for you. Select your intended use, set your target kavalactone dose per serve, and it shows how much of each format you need, what that serve costs at current wholesale rates, and how many serves a single pack yields.
Typical per-serve doses run 200–300 mg. A traditional Pacific shell is roughly 250–350 mg; supplement servings are usually 100–250 mg.

Kavayn RTD Spirit
350 mg / 1.5 fl oz
Best fitHow this is calculated. Every product is normalised to milligrams of kavalactones to enable a comparison between the different formats e.g. a 5% root powder and an 80% oleoresin. Cost per serve = (price per pack ÷ kavalactones per pack) × your target dose.
Format suitability. Application filtering reflects how each format is normally used — it is guidance, not a hard rule. If your process handles a format the filter rules out, add it back and it will be costed alongside the rest.
The finished-product row. Kavayn's RTD Spirit is an in-house finished retail product, available wholesale, and included as a 'buy-it-made' benchmark for kava bars and community settings. Its cost per serve includes formulation and packaging, so it is not like-for-like with a wholesale ingredient cost.
Assumptions. Products are modelled at the midpoint of their published kavalactone range unless stated otherwise — actual batch values are on the Certificate of Analysis and vary by harvest. Prices are entry-level wholesale rates in USD, exclusive of freight and duty; volume tiers reduce them. Turn on Edit kavalactone % and prices to model your own quoted rates and batch assays.
Cost per milligram is not the whole picture. Nano-emulsified formats are engineered for bioavailability, so a milligram delivered is not equivalent to a milligram of unemulsified root powder. Labour, waste, shelf life and packaging also sit outside this model.
Cheapest per milligram is rarely cheapest per business
The calculator answers a narrow cost/serve question. Three things it deliberately does not price — and each can outweigh the raw ingredient cost.
Labour and waste
Traditional grind wins on ingredient cost but requires kneading, straining, and disposal of spent root. A kava bar serving 200 shells a day is paying for that in staff hours and in the kavalactones left behind in the makas.
Bioavailability
Kavalactones are poorly water-soluble. A milligram in an unemulsified powder and a milligram in a highly bio available nano-emulsion are not equivalent doses. Nano formats cost more per milligram purchased and less per milligram absorbed.
Volume tiers
The prices here are entry-level wholesale rates. Ingredient cost falls meaningfully with committed volume, and the shape of that pricing curve differs by format — so the ranking at 1 kg is not necessarily the ranking at 100 kg.
Common questions
Typical per-serve doses normally fall in the 200–300 mg range. European regulatory guidance advises a 250 mg daily maximum — for where that figure comes from, how to convert a Certificate of Analysis into a per-serve inclusion rate, and what the clinical literature actually used, see Kavalactone Dosing for Formulators.
